The University awarded a contract for SPiN Thoracic Navigation System.
The SPiN Thoracic Navigation system is an electromagnetic navigation system that allows physicians to biopsy lung nodules endobronchially or percutaneously for the potential early diagnosis of lung cancer.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The SPiN Thoracic Navigation system allows for the potential early diagnosis of lung cancer. This platform provides the physician the ability to seamlessly transition from a navigated bronchoscopy to a navigated percutaneous biopsy, thus eliminating multiple costly procedures for the patient and the hospital. The ability to maximize the LCSP (Lung Cancer Screening Program) with the use of this technology enhances a physician?s ability to locate and diagnose lung cancer at earlier stages.
