The University awarded a contract for Human Lymphocyte Antigen (HLA) typing reagents .
Human Lymphocyte Antigen (HLA) typing reagents used in the matching of organ and bone marrow transplant recipients and donors at the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System (UIHHSS).
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The HLA lab performs patient matching testing for transplant patients. This is an essential step in determining transplant viability. Without it, transplant surgeries could not go on. The University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System has led the way in the curing of sickle cell disease through its use of bone marrow transplantation. Removal of this would be a detriment to the University, Hospital, and patients that it serves.
