The University awarded a contract for VNUS radiofrequency ablation system .
VNUS RF (radiofrequency) Ablation system (also called the Closure procedure) is a minimally invasive varicose vein treatment procedure that uses radio frequency energy (electricity) to heat, collapse, and seal off the targeted blood vessels.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Covidien LP VNUS RF (radiofrequency) Ablation system consists of a sheath and catheter which is used in conjunction with the Covidien LP generator during minimally invasive procedures. Without access to these medical supplies, the University of Illinois Hospital will not be able to provide this type of procedure and a patient will go elsewhere and in turn the University of Illinois Hospital will take a loss in revenue.
