The University awarded a contract for implantable intracranial cathethers.
Penumbra, Incorporated offers implantable intracranial catheters, known as the revascularization system for neurointerventional procedures for ischemic strokes. An ischemic stroke is an obstruction within a blood vessel supplying blood to the brain. Revascularization system removes brain clot occlusions from the heart by capturing and extracting with the without the need to cross through the clot. The component of the system allows the surgeon to work on the proximate surface of the occlusion which eliminated the need for navigation through or beyond the occlusion and thus reduces the trauma to the patient.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Penumbra?s revascularization systems are used in neurointerventional procedures and has to do with direct patient care. Without access to this specific equipment, the University of Illinois Hospital would not be able to offer neurointerventional surgical procedures and care that in turn would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
