The University awarded a contract for Acrysof lenses.
The Acrysof lenses are a single acrylate/methacylate copolymer material and are inserted in a one step process. This results in greater toleration by patients, increased ease of insertions/implantation with less time needed to implant, greater lens epithelial proliferations rate (rate of lens tissue growth) around the new lens, and a reduced explantation rate.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Alcon Lab lens have to do with direct patient care. Without access to the lens, the University of Illinois Hospital would not be able to offer surgical procedures and care, which in turn would drive our patients elsewhere and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
