The University awarded a contract for orthopedic equipment and supplies.
The implants, instruments, and equipment (scopes, lights, monitors) provided by Arthrex Corporation are versatile anchors, wires, screws, and plates that can be used for many different procedures in shoulder, ankle, elbow, knee, and hip procedures. Arthrex anchors are used in conjunction with fiber wires for knotless, soft-tissue repair that is designed to be used in arthroscopic stability procedures of the femoroacetabular joint. Specialized tools are used to drill to proper depth and screw tips are used to set and tighten the implanted screws. The equipment provided by Arthrex is used during arthroscopic or open shoulder surgery. An example of an arthroscopic procedure is Hip arthroscopy, sometimes called a ?hip scope,? is a minimally invasive procedure in which an orthopedic surgeon uses an arthroscope to examine the inside of the hip joint. A camera/scope displays pictures on a video monitor, and a surgeon uses these images to guide miniature surgical instruments. This procedure allows the surgeon to diagnose the cause of hip pain or other problems in your joint.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Arthrex Corporation implants have to do with direct patient care. Without access to their anchors and wires, the Hospital would not be able to offer certain orthopedic procedures that in turn would drive patients else where and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
