The University awarded a contract for TruFill Detachable Coil System.
The Johnson & Johnson TruFill Orbit Galaxy Coils & TruFill DCS Syringe II (Detachable Coil System) are implants used in the treatment of aneurysms. An aneurysm occurs when part of an artery wall weakens, allowing it to balloon out or widen abnormally. Coil embolization is a minimally invasive procedure to treat an aneurysm by filling it with material that closes off the sac and reduces the risk of bleeding. It is performed from within the artery (endovascular) through a steerable catheter inserted into the blood stream at the groin and guided to the brain.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Johnson & Johnson implants have to do with direct patient treatment and care. Without access to these specific supplies the hospital would not be able to treat aneurysms that in turn would drive patients else where and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
