The University awarded a contract for Supplementary Intra-Operative Monitoring services.
Supplementary Intra-Operative Monitoring services which will provide the standard care for the hospital surgery patients. IOM is used to monitor an anesthetized patient's brain & spinal cord function during a surgery procedure. Intraoperative neuromonitoring protects patients by continuously monitoring the central nervous system (the brain, spinal cord, and nerves) when it is at risk during surgery. Electrodes or needles attached to the patient's relevant anatomy continuously transmit information, which can be viewed by the surgeon on a monitor.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The SpecialtyCare medical services have to do with direct patient care. Without access to these specific supplies. The hospital would not be able to offer the proper surgical procedures and care which would drive patients else where and a loss in revenue to the hospital.
