This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for performing sponsored research and other sponsored activities under grants and contracts funded by the sponsor or by sources other than State appropriations. (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b)(8)) Having this instrument in labs is absolutely essential for the NIH funded research. The labs are using an innovative approach called single cell RNA-sequencing that allows identifying transcriptional profiles of individual cells. The current set up in the lab is custom made and is inefficient. Importantly, it does not allow to address many questions in their research due to low rates of capture and inconsistency with a specific reagent called ?Bar coded beads?. These issues are solved in the instrument from 10X Genomics.
