The University awarded a contract for Radiopharmaceutical Microspheres.
The implants provided by Biocompatibles, Inc. are radiopharmaceutical microspheres which are used to treat patients with liver cancer using Yttrium doses which are unique. The microsphere containing the radioactive Yttrium-90 are used for treating liver cancer using novel small particle technology. TheraSphere is delivered to a tumor through a catheter that the physician guides into the hepatic artery, the liver's main blood vessel. Once in place, the microspheres are inserted into the catheter where they can enter the smaller blood vessels supplying the tumor and block the flow of blood. Then the microspheres emit radiation to destroy cancer cells in the tumor while sparing healthy liver tissue.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Biocompatibles Inc., implants have to do with direct patient care. Without access to their radiopharmaceutical microsphere the hospital would not be able to offer certain cancer treatment, which in turn would drive patients elsewhere and a loss in revenue to the hospital.
