The University awarded a contract for a Bench Top Scanning Electron Microscope.
This bench top scanning electron microscope will allow us to obtain compositions and images of minerals and other phases from a thin section (rockslide) and round mounts. Further post analysis processing is also needed to perform automated identification and quantification of phases within a mixed mode sample.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for performing sponsored research and other sponsored activities under grants and contracts funded by the sponsor or by sources other than State appropriations. (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b)(8)) Currently, there is no laboratories in the department and at UIC that allow us to obtain such mineral data in a few seconds with the same ease of use.
