The University awarded a contract for Dominick's to Dominick's, Oakbrook, IL, for an estimated $29,550.
Dominick's Pharmacies has provided the College of Pharmacy with residency-trained, practicing community pharmacists to facilitate skills workshops for our professional year 1 and 2 students for the past two years. The workshops involve hands-on training and assessment of the students in practice skills such as patient interviewing, counseling, and medication order/prescription processing. As such, they require multiple faculty 'facilitators' in order to give each student the appropriate amount of time and attention during the learning process. Facilitators must have current knowledge and experience in pharmacy in order to effectively train the students. They should also have some experience in teaching and/or preparing students. The Dominick's pharmacists who participate in our program and currently practicing at a Dominick's pharmacy, so they are well versed in current practices and standards. They are also residency-trained, which gives them an exposure to teaching/preparing students. The pharmacists who participate in our program are away from their pharmacies for a half-day each week during the academic year and this time is covered by other pharmacists employed by Dominick's.
This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the
partnership has allowed us to deliver the workshop courses effectively without having to add large numbers of faculty, thus keeping the cost to the university as low as possible. We approached other community pharmacy chains with the offer of this partnership, but Dominick's was the only chain that could meet our needs in regards to the time commitment of the pharmacists each week and the level of training/experience required by the pharmacists.
