NIU is accepting submittals of qualifications by firms interested in providing interior design and architectural consultation services for the Duke Ellington Ballroom in the Holmes Student Center at the DeKalb campus. The Ballroom has not been updated in many years and is in need of a fresh look. The ballroom is used for a variety of events and consequently requires extensive lighting, acoustical, audio and visual capabilities. The selected firm will be responsible for designing interior decor and audio/visual technology that will include:

  • Submitting a detailed review of the existing facility including design, decor, audio/visual, acoustical and lighting applications
  • Conducting interviews with key University personnel to establish space usage and design requirements
  • Meeting with the Ballroom Project Committee to present options in design/decor of the facility throughout the process
  • Providing specifications for all treatments, equipment, and technology to be included in the remodeling of the ballroom
  • Providing a final set of construction documents, including plans and specifications, to the University and provide construction, procurement, and installation oversight

Submittal Requirements
Although the University will administer this project, use of the CDB Standard Form 255 is required for submittal of qualifications. Please include the following:

  • Resumes of key project personnel
  • Evidence of pre-qualification with the Capital Development Board (CDB)
  • References
  • Descriptions of similar previously completed projects and information regarding current workload and availability
Supplemental submittal information is optional.

A selection committee has been established by the University to review those firms that indicate interest in this project. The committee will evaluate all submittals and recommend a preferred firm based on the following weighted evaluation criteria:
  • 50% Successful completion of similar facility projects
  • 20% CDB and state university experience
  • 10% Minority and Female Business Enterprise Program involvement
