Southern Illinois University Carbondale houses the Advanced Coal and Energy Research Center, which is the State of Illinois? University Research Institute for the promotion of the wise use of coal and other energy sources in the State, region, and nation.

The Advanced Coal and Energy Research Center and Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research are seeking a qualified team of engineering and planning firms to conduct a logistics research study of the coal industry. This project will be used to describe coal infrastructure in Illinois and to develop conceptual engineering solutions to alleviate transportation bottlenecks.

As a service to the coal industry, this logistics research study will be used to inform the energy industry and policy makers about how to increase the use of Illinois coal in international markets. The project will result in a report on existing data and an engineering study. If more funding becomes available, the project may be extended to include new data and additional engineering work.
