This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for performing sponsored research and other sponsored activities under grants and contracts funded by the sponsor or by sources other than State appropriations. (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b)(8)) The Vicon system is preferred for our intended applications and their hardware, software, and customer support quality. Vicon cameras are specifically designed for use in motion capture systems. The illumination fields of the strobe units are specifically matched to the field-of-view of different lenses. The cameras all have sensors that will alert the user when the system has been bumped after calibration. Unlike other systems, the Vicon system requires only a single cable to provide power, synchronization, and data transmission, greatly simplifying system set up. The Nexus software package is capable of calibrating the system, capturing data, and processing the data without the need for third party software but is also equipped with Matlab and Python integration. Thus, when the use of third party software is necessary, the data will not have to be exported from Nexus and imported into the third-party software, such as Matlab, and vice versa.
