The University
awarded
a contract for
research animals
to
The Jackson Laboratory
for
an estimated $65,000.
Numerous research projects utilize animals from this source for long-term on-going studies. Animals bred and maintained in isolated colonies become genetically adapted over time. Therefore, minor genetic variations occur between colonies maintained by different vendors. These genetic variations interfere with consistency of experimental results and could jeopordize very expensive and important research. Purchase of animals from the same vendor provides for less variability in the research and thus greatly improves the quality and reproducibility of the studies. It is essential to continue to purchase animals from the same source that previously supplied those animals for those studies.
