The University awarded a contract for a Leica Microscope to Leica Microsystems Incorporated, Bannockburn, IL, for an estimated $499,973.
This is a Leica TCS SP5 Spectral Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope
This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the
item or service is copyrighted or patented and is not available except from the holder of the copyright or patent.
The Leica spectral LSCM system provides far better signal sensitivity than the competing spectral LSCM systems because of several patented features, including their AOBS (Acousto Optical Beam Splitter, US Patent 6510001B1) and their Spectral Detector and Prism combination (US Patents 6614526B1 and US5886784). Competing systems user filters and diffraction gratings that have far less light transmission efficiency than the Leica system. The improved signal sensitivity of the Leica system is required by our faculty.
