The University awarded a contract for academic pediatric endocrinology services to Springfield Clinic, LLP, Springfield, IL, for an estimated $180,000.
Pediatric endocrinologists will develop a pediatric endocrinology elective for medical students (develop, update & implement curriculum & evaluate students' performance per departmental expectations), develop and coordinate the Residency Program in pediatric endocrinology, attend departmental grand rounds, attend monthly meetings, attend departmental conferences, act as a resident/student faculty mentor, assist day hospital in the development of outpatient endocrine protocols, provide four 1 hour didactic sessions per year for pediatric residents during core conference and provide 1 hour pediatric endocrinology streamer for medical students once every 6 weeks. Pediatric endocrinologists shall perform such other academic services related to the pediatric endocrinology training program as necessary.
The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the cost to contract with Springfield Clinic for pediatric endocrinology services was significantly less than developing the division within SIU School of Medicine. Pediatric Endocrinology curriculum is required for SIU School of Medicine's accreditation with the ACGME. Springfield Clinic is located in Springfield, Illinois, as is SIU School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics. It is logistically the best option of providing pediatric endocrinology academic service to students and residents.
