The University awarded a contract for a PCR Smart Cycler system to Cepheid for $55,100.
The major research project being conducted by the Parkinson Disease Center at Southern Illinois University required quantitative analysis of mRNA using real-time PCR. The real-time PCR analyses for the initial phase of the research project were conducted in the laboratory of one of the collaborating investigators. His laboratory is equipped with a Cepheid Smart Cylcer II system and all the work to date has been done using this equipment and matching reagents.

To avoid changing methods in the middle of the project, it is important that the same real-time PCR analyses of mRNA equipment and reagents for this research project be used. Also, considering both time and cost efficiency of performing these analyses in the laboratory, it is preferable to continue to do the mRNA real-time PCR analyes with the same instrumentation and methods.
