The University awarded a contract for a special-purpose research microscope to Hitschfel Instruments for $25,971.05.
The Olympus BX51WI is a special-purpose research microscope necessary for ongoing research at SIU School of Medicine. This research requires that immersion and deep magnification procedures be performed simultaneously. A key application is the imaging of in vivo brain slices for sophisticated electrophysiological measurement. The microscope provides the stability crucial for patch clamping and is equipped with dedicated water immersion objectives and near IR illumination. The optical system is tailored for high-contrast, high-resolution images under the challenging conditions of thick brain slice observation. Patch clamp-compatible water immersion objectives with IR to UV transmission and special DIC components are included. A magnification changer permits 2x and 4x magnification increase without objective change. The objective design and large working distance afford a crucial 43 degree large pipette approach angle.
