The University awarded a contract for microscope and imaging system to Hitschfel Instruments Incorporated for $66,950.32.
This contract is for an Olympus IX71 research inverted microscope and imaging analysis system. The microscope will allow researchers to view cells that have been labeled with a variety of fluorochromes, view cells using relief contrast, to image these cells with a camera that will capture publication-quality images, and to perform quantitive image analysis. This type of imaging is beneficial to the evaluation of changes, in the shape of cells in culture, in response to various culture conditions and treatments. The camera is capable of detecting low intensity fluorescence that is undetectable with the human eye and software included in the purchase will also allow superimposed images be captured with multiple wavelength filter sets. The tissues and cells stained with fluorescent stains or with non-flourescent chromagens can be viewed, imaged and analyzed with the proposed upgrade. Only Olympus equipment can be used to upgrade this microscope, due to compatibility issues regarding its optics and the only designated representative in the Springfield, Illinois area.
