The University awarded a contract for academic and administrative services to Academic Radiology, Inc., Springfield, Illinois, for $48,274.59.
Radiology is a clinical subspeciality in the field of medicine and a core corse to meet the requirements for graduation from an accredited medical school. For SIU School of Medicine students, radiology is a requirement during certain phases of the curriculum and is also offered in 10 clinical electives for students in either two or four week segments during the fourth year of their medical education. This instruction necessitates curriculum planning and development of course materials and schedules; academic interface with other clinical departments; and coordination of radiology faculty for participation and presentation in order to successfully administer this clincal specialty. Radiology, unlike other clinical departments at SIU School of Medicine is without a full-time department chair or faculty and must rely upon the professional services of a practicing radiologist to assume coordination of these academic and administrative responsibilities. P.F. Mahon, M.D., a community-based radiologist and employee of Academic Radiology, Inc., has provided the academic and administrative services to SIU School of Medicine for the past 28 years. He coordinates the volunteer faculty effort necessary to provide this instruction and represents Radiology in administrative functions of the medical school. Additionally, Dr. Mahon has contributed to the administrative interactions of the medical school and the University with the medical community and other entities on a local and state level.
