The University awarded a contract for an Avanti J-20XPI centrifuge to Beckman Coulter Inc. for $34,632.75.
This centrifuge is needed for working with microorganisms that are of most threat to being used in Biological Warfare (that is, C. botulinum, anthrax, tularemia, and brucella). The rotors and buckets have special adaptors for biohazard security and are designed to be used with infestious pathogens. Each tube rack fits inside its own bucket with an "O" ring around the seal. This will prevent any type of aerosol containing hazardous microorganisms from being released into the air when a tube is broke while in the centrifuge. The rotors and biosafe containers are unique to this centrifuge. For these reasons SIU School of Medicine is classifying this purchase as a sole source.
