The University awarded a contract for research animals to The Jackson Laboratory, Chicago IL for an estimated $65,000.
Numerous research projects utilize animals from this source for long-term on-going studies. Animals bred and maintained in isolated colonies become genetically adapted over time. Therefore, minor genetic variations interfere with consistency of experimental results and could jeopardize very expensive and important research. Purchase of animals from the same vendor provides for less variability.
This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the animals purchased from the same source that previously supplied those animals for the studies improves the quality and reproducibility of the studies.
