The University awarded a contract for an enterprise archive server to GE Medical Systems, Inc. Madison, Wisconsin, for $46,355.
This purchase is a sole source because compatibility with existing equipment is of paramount importance. In addition, the software is proprietary to the recommended vendor and unavailable from any other source. The enterprise archive server will be used to provide long-term storage of radiological images currently being captured and stored on a short-term basis in a GE Medical Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). The stored images allow radiologists to diagnose patient conditions and document the results of the diagnoses. The software for the server is proprietary to GE and is required to enable transfer of images from the PACS to the enterprise archive server while maintaining the appropriate information in the PACS database so the images can be correctly identified and retrieved as required.

There is only one economically feasible source for this server and software because the PACS system is copyrighted by GE Medical Systems and only GE Medical Systems can provide the Enterprise Archive server. There is no other vendor who can provide the hardware and software for the transfer and storage of images from the GE PACS.
