The University awarded a contract for carbon dioxide laser fibers.
Carbon dioxide laser fibers are a high-energy delivery system that provides precise tissue cutting, tissue vaporization and coagulation. The fibers are versatile, enabling surgeons to easily access difficult-to-reach anatomy by using one of the designated hand pieces, flexible endoscope, or with robotically assisted techniques.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The carbon dioxide laser fibers can be used to treat a wide variety of ailments in areas including otolaryngology, Otology, and Gynecology. The Omniquide?s flexible laser fibers are used in conjunction with the DaVinci Robot. This device has patented specifications that interface with the DaVinci Robot used at the hospital.
