The University awarded a contract for synthetic vascular grafts.
Synthetic vascular graft materials are used to patch injured or diseased areas of arteries for replacement of whole segments of larger arteries such as the aorta and for use as sewing cuffs (as with the heart valve mentioned above).
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) W.L. GORE offers synthetic vascular graft which is an implant used in direct patient care. Without access to this medical supplies, we will not be able to provide this type of procedure and a patient will go elsewhere and in turn, the University of Illinois Hospital will take a loss in revenue.
