The University awarded a contract for BD BACTEC blood culture media.
BD BACTEC blood culture media that are used with the BD BACTEC instrumented blood culture systems that the University of Illinois Hospital already has. These blood culture media are used to screen for microorganisms in the blood to help diagnose patients at the University of Illinois Hospital.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) BD BACTEC blood culture media effectively neutralizes a wide variety of antibiotics, allowing the growth of microorganisms that may not occur with conventional media. This feature makes for more accurate diagnosis and effective treatment, potentially shorter hospital stays, lower patient costs, and greater overall laboratory and hospital efficiency.
