The University awarded a contract for Harmony Prenatal test to Estoterix Genetic Laboratories, Burlington, NC, for an estimated $2,250,000.
Integrated Genetics Laboratories, a division of LabCorp Specialty Testing Group, provides a wide array of reproductive testing. The laboratory is currently utilized for diagnostic testing of UI Hospital and outpatient clinic patients. Integrated Genetics is the exclusive provider for the Harmony Pre-Natal Test that was developed by Ariosa Diagnostics.
Recently, University Hospital's OB&GYN unit requires that all high risk obstetric patients, females >35 years and expanding to other low risk patients as well must have a Harmony Pre-Natal test available to assess risk of genetic abnormalities and receive appropriate genetic counseling if needed. This is a safe, noninvasive pre-natal test (NIPT) for detecting fetal trisomies in maternal blood.
The UIC Hospital's Lab has an "existing electronic test results interface" with the vendor. This process originated in 2007 when Integrated Genetics installed the software. Consequently, the Hospital's physicians and staff have access to patient test results so that timely and sensitive results are available for genetic and safety concerns.
The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the item or service is copyrighted or patented and is not available except from the holder of the copyright or patent.
