The University awarded a contract for endomechanical devices.
Covidien?s Endomechanical devices are used in minimally invasive surgical procedures that require little to no cutting. Covidien?s endomechanical device is a two part system. One that is a stapler (Tri-Staple) and the other is a reload (Endo GIA Black Reload). Both are designed for thick tissue applications in bariatric and thoracic procedures, the Endo GIA Black Reload with Tri-Staple provides staple formation and strength, with a tissue thickness range of 2.25mm ? 3.00mm.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Covidien?s Endomechanical devices and supplies are part of direct patient care. Without these devices and supplies the University of Illinois Hospital would not be able to perform endomechanical procedures that in turn would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
