The University awarded a contract for Boston Keratoprosthesis an artifical cornea to Massachusetts Eye & Ear Associates, Boston, MA, for an estimated $300,000.
The Boston Keratoprosthesis is an â??artificial corneaâ?? that can be used in severe corneal opacity. Many people with corneal disease can be helped by regular corneal transplantation involving tissue transplanted from human donors. This is the most common treatment for severe corneal opacity; however, in some cases such transplantation is hopeless, or nearly so. The Boston KProâ?¢ can be used after standard corneal transplant failure or when such a transplant would be unlikely to succeed. Thus keratoprosthesis implantation is a procedure designed to help patients whose conditions are the most difficult to treat.

The KPro is made of clear plastic with excellent tissue tolerance with optical properties. The design has a titantium plate; which eliminates the need for a locking ring. Many surgeons prefer the Boston K-Pro because it's design makes for straightforward placement and follows the usual corneal transplant procedure.
The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the Surgeons have confidence and request Boston K-Pro due to it's unique specifications.
