The University awarded a contract for endoscopes, light sources, and cameras.
KARL STORZ will provide flexible/rigid scopes, light sources, and cameras that are used in endoscopic procedures. Lower/Upper endoscopy is a procedure that enables the examiner (usually a gastroenterologist) to examine the esophagus (swallowing tube), stomach, and duodenum (first portion of small bowel) using a thin, flexible tube called the upper endoscope with a camera on the tip through which the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum can be viewed using a TV monitor. The flexible/rigid scopes, light sources, cameras and video towers are used in tandem during endoscopic procedures.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) KARL STORZ equipment is used in endoscopic procedures which have to do with direct patient care. Without access to this specific equipment the University of Illinois Hospital would not be able to offer endoscopic surgical procedures that in turn would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss in revenue to the Hospital.
