The University awarded a contract for short term respite care and shelter to The Boulevard, Chicago, IL, for an estimated $450,000.
The Boulevard provides short term respite care shelter and social support to homeless persons recovering from illness or injury. They only accept patients if they have a medical diagnosis and are discharged from a hospital or emergency department. Their wrap-around services allow the homeless to receive the needed medical recovery care to heal after discharge and avoid multiple hospital and emergency room readmissions.
The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the The Boulevard provides housing and three meals a day to the homeless, but also has an on-site primary care Federally Qualified Health Care Clinic (FQHC), Behavioral Health Counseling, Medication Administration, 3 - 5 hours of education, and counseling around drug and alcohol rehabilitation.
