The University awarded a contract for a CMA and LEED optics combination system to LK Technologies, Inc., Bloomington, IN for $49,250.
This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the equipment has capabilities that are specifically required for the intended use that are not available from any other firm. This is the only firm that has a cylindrical mirror analyzer (CMA) mounted on a small 2 " flange and requres only one electron gun for both the low energy electron diffraction (LEED) optics and the CMA instruments. Both feature offer a compact design which is important because it will save critical space in the vacuum chamber where it will be housed with other instrumentation. The compact design will allow for ease of operation, eliminating the need for additional ladders and platforms that would increase the difficulty of use and also decrease safety. No other vendor offers these two features. This equipment will be used for studying the surface structure and chemistries of various materials.
