The University awarded a contract for an Axio-Imager microscope to Carl Zeiss Microimaging, Inc., Thornwood, NY for $36,138.
This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the equipment has capabilities that are specifically required for the intended use that are not available from any other firm. This is the only manufacturer that has a motorized stage and focus controls with the precision and mobility required for the high resolution reconstruction of specimens. This is important because image continuity is essential for an accurate and reproducible cellular quantification of neuropathology changes in models of Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases. No other manufacturer offers the level of resolution required for this image continuity. In addition, the equipment must be compatible with two existing Carl Zeiss microscope, one purchased in 2002 for approximately $354,310 and the other purchased in 2005 for approximately $212,000. Compatibility is important in order to achieve consistency in data obtained from different labs within the department and will also allow for the sharing and interchangeability of imaging and microscopy components. The equipment will be used for studying Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative diseases.
