Comments: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is a private, non-profit organization that reviews and accredits graduate medical education (residency and fellowship) programs, and the institutions that sponsor them, in the United States. The ACGME was established in 1981 from a consensus in the academic medical community for an independent accrediting organization. Its forerunner was the Liaison Committee for Graduate Medical Education, established in 1972. The mission of the ACGME is to improve health care and population health by assessing and advancing the quality of resident physicians' education through accreditation.

In the current marketplace, ACGME continues to be the only "accreditation body" in the United States.
