The University awarded a contract for a combined optical coherence tomography system to Ophthalmic Technologies, Inc., Toronto, Ontario, Canada for $65,000.
This system is a combined optical coherence tomography (OCT) and confocal scanning ophthalmoscope (CSO) system for animal scanning (rabbit).
This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the item or service is copyrighted or patented and is not available except from the holder of the copyright or patent. This is the only instrument that offers acquisition of a confocal image of the fundus (the part of the eye opposite the pupil) by a technique known as scanning laser opthalmoscopy (SLO), in addition to the standard optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging that provides a cross sectional view of the retinal tissue. This feature is important for direct visualization of the retinal pathologies and more accurate localization of areas interest for OCT imaging.
