The University awarded a contract for disposable medical supplies.
Cardinal Health will provide disposable medical supplies such as surgical/examination gloves, surgical gowns, and numerous other disposable or implantable medical supplies. Surgical/examination gloves act as a protective barrier to prevent possible transmission of diseases between healthcare professionals and patients during surgical procedures or clinical examinations. A surgical gown is a personal protective garment intended to be worn by health care personnel during surgical procedures to protect both the patient and health care personnel from the transfer of microorganisms, body fluids, and particulate matter. All these supplies are used either in surgical procedures or the everyday care of patients.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Cardinal Health?s medical supplies have to do with direct patient treatment and care. Without these supplies the Hospital would not be able to offer patient care that in turn would drive patients else where and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
