The University awarded a contract for absorbable hemostat powder .
The Balt absorbable hemostat powder is a sterile, absorbable hemostatic agent. It consists of Microporous Polysaccharide Hemospheres that are used adjunctively in surgical procedures to assist in the control of capillary, venous, and small arterial hemorrhage when ligation or other conventional methods of control are impractical during a surgical procedure.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Balt USA hemostat powder has to do with direct patient care. Without access to their hemostat powder the hospital would not be able to offer certain procedures that in turn would drive patients else where and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
