The University awarded a contract for reagents for COVID-19 testing.
Fisher Scientific supplies are reagents for testing patients for COVID-19. The kit is used with ribonucleic acid (RNA, a nucleic acid present in all living cells) extracted from nasopharyngeal swabs, nasopharyngeal aspirate (nasal aspirate), and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) from patients at risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 or with signs and symptoms of COVID-19.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Fisher Scientific reagents have to do with direct patient treatment and care. Without access to these reagents, the Hospital would not be able to test patients for COVID-19. A lack of testing would be detrimental to the control of COVID-19.
