Queensland lost the technical expertise needed to classify chest x-rays for pneumoconiosis and does not have the capacity to handle the volume of new images coming into the surveillance system. The Queensland government has been relying on Dr. Robert Cohen, of the University of Illinois School of Public Health to manage this surveillance while Queensland develops local expertise. Starting in 2016, Dr. Cohen has been classifying coal miner?s chest x-ray images for the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mining The protocol for image classification requires review of each image by at least two, and up to five qualified B-readers.
The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the items are required for research and no other source is able to meet the researcher's documented needs.
