The University awarded a contract for disposable intubation protector supplies.
Karl Storz provides disposable protector supplies for intubation, which is a technique for establishing airway access in patients with both anticipated and unanticipated difficult airways. An example of its use is fiberoptic intubation (FOI) scope which is paired with a disposable clear plastic protector sleeve to help direct the scope through the airway of a patient. These disposable supplies are used in the ER or routine surgical cases.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Karl Storz medical supplies have to do with direct patient treatment and care. Without access to these specific supplies, the Hospital would not be able to offer patient care that in tern would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
