The University awarded a contract for a near-field scanning optical microscope system to Veeco Instruments, Inc., Santa Barbara, CA for $131,000.
This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the vendor is the only manufacturer of the nanotechnology based system for molecular imaging of life cells. This is the only molecular imaging instrument that has a resolution of less than 1-100 nanometers on the cell surface and intracellular components. This is required for imaging interaction on cell surfaces and also image interactions within the cell. This is not available from any other manufacturer. Although there are fluorescent microscopes and confocal microscope available, they can only image objects that are larger than 1-10um (1000 times larger than nanometers) and would not allow scientist to observe molecular images on cell surfaces or intracellular parts. This equipment will be used for advanced nanotechnology imaging studies of molecular interaction between host immune cells and microbes.
