The University awarded a contract for software licensing, support and maintenance to Kaufman Hall, Skokie, IL, for an estimated $940,000.
The current software used by UI Hospital and Clinics (Trendstar) is being sunset by the vendor as of 12/31/2018. This software is used by our Business Planning and Decision Support department to establish cost accounting standards for all services provided by UIH. Cost accounting is used to allocate cost to the individual services provided to patients and to analyze our operations in various ways - based on service line, by physician, by location, by payor, etc. It enables UIH to understand the total cost of care and identify cost saving opportunities. Cost data is critical in order to make strategic decisions about what healthcare services to provide and in understanding their financial results. Decision support data is also used in quality improvement activities as it combines clinical data (patient diagnosis, acuity, physician providers, etc) with financial data (cost to provide care and reimbursement for services). We must have a replacement for Trendstar in place before the sunset of this aging software. Because this software application is unique to the healthcare industry, comparable functionality is not available in any other University software. The Capital Planning software is needed to integrate with our existing budgeting and financial planning applications and will automate current analysis and tracking functions now being done via Excel.
The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the procurement is software license, upgrade or maintenance.
