The University awarded a contract for disposable laparoscopic supplies.
KARL STORZ disposables are used in laparoscopic procedures such as insufflation tubing, filters, connectors, containers, etc. The insufflation tubing is used to expand the stomach during laparoscopic procedures. The filter prevents bacterial and viral contamination from possible backflow of surgical smoke, protecting both equipment and operating room personnel. The connectors are used to connect two or more tubing to create a longer tubing extension.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) KARL STORZ supplies are used in laparoscopic procedures that have to do with direct patient care. Without access to these specific supplies the Hospital would not be able to offer laparoscopic surgical procedures that would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
