The University awarded a contract for a Fourier-Domain OCT system to Optovue, Inc., Fremont, CA for $55,450.
This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the vendor is the only manufacturer of a commercially available, stand alone, high speed, high resolution, spectral domain, optical coherence tomography (OCT) unit. This unique equipment has a 5-micron resolution for retinal imaging. This is important because the higher resolution will improve diagnostic capability. It will facilitate earlier diagnoses and monitoring of treatment for various blinding retinal diseases. This is not available from any other manufacturer. Although there are other companies that have OCT systems, they do not have a resolution better than 10 micron for retinal imaging or are not FDA approved. Optovue is the sole manufacturer of a stand alone, optical coherence tomography (OCT) system with a 5 micron resolution of retinal images. This equipment will be used for performing diagnoses and the monitoring of treatment for various blinding retinal diseases.
