The University awarded a contract for a semiconductor device to Bandwidth Semiconductor, Hudson, NH for $36,300.
The purchase of the semiconductor device includes: fabrication, packaging, wafers, ion implantation, and photon-masks.
This purchase is only economically available from a single source because the specification called for the ability to grow very low-doped epitaxial layers of gallium arsenide (GaAs) on a 3 inch wafer. This is important because the research requires the optoelectronic device to have very low doping density which is necessary to support the high voltage requirements of the 600 volt power device. This is not available from any other vendor. In addition, the equipment was specifically approved in the U.S. Office of Naval Research award number N00014-06-0227 entitled Optically-gated Non-latched High Gain Power Device.
