The University awarded a contract for Dental equipment and components to Pelton & Crane, Charlotte, NC, for an estimated $626,800.
Pelton&Crane will supply dental operatory units for one 25 chair Patient Care Clinic and one 26 chair Pre-Patient Care Clinic for the educational support of the dental students as well as for the treatment of dental patients.
This is an economically feasible request as quotes were obtained from other dental supply vendors and the results clearly acknowledge that Pelton & Crane discounted pricing can't be matched.
Compatibility of Dental equipment from Pelton & Crane will include the Vista Clear water purification system, which requires specific and unique tools and chemicals for periodic required maintenance. The Vista Clear water system ensures the safest filtered water for patient care without chemical additives. Pelton & Crane is the only vendor offering the Vista Clear system.
Another example is the compatability with Pelton & Crane dental handpieces (low- and high-speed drills) which are utilized at the College of Dentistry. The handpeices require specific and unique Pelton & Crane couplers which allow attachment to the dental units that are installed in all nine Patient Care Clinics. The handpieces are sterilized in a central sterilization unit, and must comply with sterilization protocols. Thus compatible Pelton & Crane handpieces are essential to meet sterilization standards. The sterilization and lubrication processes also vary between manufacturers, and introducing different equipment would require additional processes, materials and staff training.
One of the features of the Pelton & Crane operatory units is it's unique lighting source that includes technology which allows more accurate color photo clarity than lighting from other manufacturers, which contributes to the success of esthetic patient outcomes and student learning. The Pelton & Crane Helios light has the ability to remove all blue light from the spectrum with a touch of a button. This allows a light spectrum which will not polymerize the composite filling tooth colored material, allowing adequate time for the dentist to contour a restoration in an illuminated field of view prior to curing (hardening) the material.
An additional cost to the College related to dental equipment purchase is ongoing maintenance. The dental equipment specialists at the College have received, and continue to receive, training specific to the requirements of Pelton & Crane dental equipment both on-site and off-site. The unique supplies, parts, and tools are stocked at the College solely to maintain and service this line of dental equipment. Within the past 5 years, the dental equipment specialists at the College have received annual training from Pelton Crane on the equipment at a cost of an estimated $ 60,000. In conclusion, acquistion of Pelton & Crane equipment will allow for the previous acquired training and maintenane knowledge to benefit the support and utilization of additional Pelton & Crane equipment.
The University has determined that this purchase is only economically available from this source because the compatibility of equipment, accessories, replacement parts, or service is a paramount consideration.
