The University awarded a contract for NeuWave Microwave Ablation System.
Johnson & Johnson's NeuWave Microwave Ablation System is used to treat liver tumor procedures that consist of medical equipment and disposable medical supplies. Liver ablation is a treatment that destroys liver tumors without removing them. These techniques can be used in patients with a few small tumors and when surgery is not a good option (often because of poor health or reduced liver function).
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Johnson & Johnson medical supplies have to do with direct patient treatment and care. Without access to these specific supplies the hospital would not be able to offer liver tumor treatment and would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
