The University awarded a contract for disposables for ION Endoluminal robotic system.
Disposables for the Intuitive ION Endoluminal robotic-assisted platform used for minimally invasive biopsy in the lungs. The system requires disposable probes, sensor connection cleaner, and ultra-thin, ultra-maneuverable catheter that allows navigation far into the peripheral lung and extracts a biopsy via a retractable needle for sampling. Ions fully articulating catheter and flexible needle enable accurate biopsy. To help extend the life of the disposable, reprocessing and consumable kits are used for the sterilization process.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The Intuitive Surgical, Incorporated ION Robot System and disposable supplies has to do with direct patient treatment and care. Without access to these disposables, the Hospital would not be able to offer various surgical procedures that would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
